Hybrid service delivery with HP and IT4IT—find your blueprint at HP Discover

By Erik van Busschbach

Today, IT needs to operate in two modes. Analyst firm Gartner calls this new operating model bimodal IT. Others call it two-speed IT. The terminology is less important than the idea that IT needs to excel in two areas simultaneously. It needs to deliver the security, stability, compliance, and cost-effectiveness of traditional, core IT functions. And at the same time it needs to function as an innovation engine for the business, providing the capabilities of fluid IT.

For many IT organizations, excelling at one mode is challenging enough. To evolve so that you can deliver both requires a specific blueprint.

This is where the Open Group IT4IT reference architecture comes in. (I’ll be presenting on how IT4IT can help accelerate the adoption of cloud services brokerage at HP Discover Vegas 2015.) IT4IT prescribes the functions and data model of an end-to-end value chain. So if you’re a CIO or IT leader, you can look to IT4IT for a blueprint of the fundamental functions and information that you need to manage your entire IT service lifecycle.

Recapping HP Discover in videos from Las Vegas

Last week thousands of the brightest minds in technology gathered in Las Vegas for HP Discover 2014. By all accounts the massive event was inspiring and educational, and the key theme throughout was innovation.  I’ve compiled my favorite videos from the event as the majority was filmed and available online.

Find out how IT can deliver business value—with HP Software Professional Services at HP Discover

ebook cover.JPGHP Discover always marks a flurry of activity for me. I’m usually booked from morning til night, meeting customers and hearing directly from them about their IT concerns. How can they better enable their IT organisations to meet business demands? How can they compete—and lead—in an environment where cloud, security, mobility, and big data are converging to produce the New Style of IT?  How can we help with their journey?

We’ve recently collected our expertise into a new ebook, “Deliver business value,” which presents our view of how enterprise IT can lead and compete in the New Style of IT. We’re launching it just in time for HP Discover—where I hope it will serve as a useful guide for the steps you can take to turn IT into a business enabler and engine of innovation in your enterprise.

The top 3 conversations from HP Discover

michael-garrett2.jpgEarlier this month I was in Las Vegas for HP Discover, our big semi-annual conference. On trips like this, I’m with customers from morning until evening, listening to IT leaders and hearing about their current challenges and working with them on solutions.

This time around I noticed a change in my conversations with customers. It’s as if we’ve reached a tipping point with the volume and connectedness of solutions that HP Software is now offering. So customers who may been siloed in the past are seeing solutions going across big data, mobility, security and the ITM portfolio, and they’re seeing the 1+1=3 benefits they get from this. What’s also striking is the relevance of these solutions to our customers—we’re solving real-world problems that basically no one else can solve.

When I look back on the conversations, these are the three highlights that stood out for me.

Is social networking risky for the enterprise?

Maybe it’s because part of my day job is to interact with the IT community through my blog, Twitter and Facebook, but it seems to me that enterprise adoption of social media has quietly gone from being on the radical fringe to mainstream without as much as a “by your leave”.

The question is not if or when, but how  it's being used that is challenging IT and compliance executives in enterprises. I take a look at where you can learn more.

IT leaders to share experiences at Discover Vegas 2012

Banner.GIFHP Discover, HP’s largest customer event, takes place June 4-7 in fabulous  Las Vegas.  I’ll be there and I can’t wait.  There will be more than 800 exhibits, displays, demos, sessions and hands-on labs, and those are always educational, thought-provoking and packed with useful, relevant information.  But it’s the people I meet and the stories I’m told that stay with me long after the exhibits are torn down and I’ve left the bright lights of Vegas behind.
