In my last post, I wrote about why your enterprise might need a Chief Digital Officer (CDO). Integrating (and profiting from) customer data that sits outside the enterprise on consumer-facing platforms like Facebook requires a very different skill set from the traditional CIO role, which has thus far been focused on the data center and running large chunks of enterprise software.


When you have a C-level role looking strategically at different integration opportunities as well as how you use business data, IT can be a revenue driver. It’s very different for IT to be an active pursuer of revenue in collaboration with the business. But we’re seeing signs that this is changing.

Today, every business is a data business. If you’re a manufacturer now in the consumer goods business, supply chain is absolutely central to what you do, and that’s software. It is all about data. That’s the back end. On the front end, social is absolutely critical if you’re in any kind of consumer facing business. 


And this is why enterprises are hiring CDOs. The information in systems of engagement becomes absolutely critical to large-scale successful consumer businesses. If you’re not leveraging it, then your competitor will be outdoing you in terms of customer knowledge.

Big data can help because typically, these complex systems create a lot of data that we need to analyse quickly in order to diagnose problems.
In this post, I look at how HP's big data solution, HAVEn, is being used to fix complex problems. 

How colleges are dropping the ball on data science

In the whitepaper, “The Precarious State of the CDO,” Data Blueprint founding director Peter Aiken offers insight into the burgeoning role of the chief data officer in today’s enterprise. Although there is “a general belief that the position is needed,” the paper surmises, “there is also a healthy skepticism that having another C-level position will really resolve the data issues existing within most organizations.” Aiken notes that, like the Chief Information Security Officer role 15 years ago, the CDO role is still evolving.

Don’t draft a Big Data blueprint until you’ve sorted out your strategy


In 2014, enterprises have moved past the initial Big Data problem of simply storing vast volumes of data to unearthing real, actionable, business value from it. As HP Autonomy VP Brian Weiss recently said on Discover Performance, “It used to be that when we talked about dealing with data volumes, it was all about storage: ‘How do I store all this cheaply? It’s a pain that I can’t delete or find anything.’ Today, it’s more about: ‘I’ve got all this user-created data, and I know there’s great value in there, but how do I get it out?’ ”


Traditional business data represents a mere 10 percent of information—but today’s new data sources and types are wide-ranging. Human information, or unstructured data, is advancing at a mind-boggling pace, but “to most computers it’s fundamentally just noise,” Weiss says.

C-suite shakeup: Where should Big Data fit in your org chart?


Big Data may be headed for the C-suite. A new McKinsey Quarterly article suggests that something like a CDO, a chief data officer, may be following such innovations as the CFO, CMO, and CSO (that’s chief strategy officer to those of us who didn’t get the memo). Enterprises have been adjusting their org charts since the ’80s, adding C-level executives as the market landscape has shifted.


The article’s writers, Brad Brown, David Court and Paul Willmott, see Big Data and analytics fueling the next tectonic shift in business, noting that “once again companies may need more top-management muscle” in the C-suite to successfully harness the power of advanced analytics.


Big Data and next-gen analytics span “a wide range of functions, including marketing, risk and operations,” say the McKinsey authors, and will cause the C-suite to “evolve in a variety of ways. In some cases, the solution will be to enhance the mandate of the chief information, marketing, strategy, or risk officer.

CIOs and CMOs: Bridging the Big Data divide


Big Data is blazing into enterprises—but it’s not all smooth sailing. In one corner office, the CIO approaches Big Data as the master of IT analytics and business data. In another corner office, the CMO is anxious to leverage a self-service tool that promises unprecedented customer insight. We recently brought together representatives from the two corner offices for our webcast “CIOs and CMOs: Who’s biggest on Big Data?


Technology analyst Michael Krieger hosted the webcast, and put the situation in clear perspective. Big data vendors are appealing directly to the lines of business, “even perhaps more so to the marketing [department] and CMO than anywhere else, bypassing traditional IT departments,” Krieger said. “But how does it all come together integrating with existing IT-owned or managed databases, applications and middleware?”

Healthcare’s big data checkup


Ken Perez, senior vice president of marketing and director of healthcare policy for MedeAnalytics Inc., recently shared on Discover Performance how the healthcare industry serves as a prime example of the challenges and opportunities that big data and analytics present to information-heavy fields. MedeAnalytics provides big data mastery in one of the most information-heavy fields, healthcare, and Perez will be speaking on the subject at the HP Vertica Big Data Conference in Boston, Aug. 5–7, detailing MedeAnalytics’ pioneering work with big data analytics.


Economic “carrots and sticks” lead to higher quality care

Complexities of our healthcare systems and the so-called “Obamacare” reforms  mean that the industry will place greater value on “applying performance metrics and economic carrots and sticks to reward improved quality and/or reduced cost,” Perez notes. This pressure and the complexities of regulatory and privacy issues make healthcare a bellwether of big data analytics.

CIO explains the importance and meaning of big data to healthcare

This leader not only believes in big data, but claims that big data will move from “differentiating healthcare organizations to table stakes.” When asked why, he said the reason is simple: “We are in the business of creating the highest value care. And big data is fundamentally about serving our patients better than we do today. And everyone in healthcare will have to do it.”

Big data’s big changes can start small

 Our main Discover Performance site just interviewed big data writer Edd Dumbill about the cultural changes enterprises will experience as they shift—and shift they must—to a data-driven world. Dumbill talks about how to create an enterprise that truly understands how to draw business value from big data, but we worried that his common-sense approach still sounded like a huge shift to make all at once. His reply was that it’s OK to start small.
