A VP-Ops’ perspective on executive relationships

The new issue of Discover Performance includes an interview with Laurie Jacobson Jones, a consultant who has been a VP of Operations with Salesforce and PeopleSoft. In that article, she talks about alignment with the business, the power of metrics, and the Ops perspective on agility. Also during our interview, she discussed the importance of key relationships within the IT organization. 


“My lens is one of those transformation ops people,” she said, “so you hire me because you want change.” That makes strong relationships with peers and business leaders all the more critical. We talked about how she approached that in her VP-Ops roles.

Is today’s CIO really just another supply chain manager?

One of the big questions facing the industry right now gets to a fundamental issue of IT’s identity: In this age of cloud computing and SaaS, is IT merely a supply chain and sourcing problem?


There’s a lot that’s been said about the relative immaturity of IT management when you compare IT to other industrial and manufacturing disciplines (I’ve made my own contribution to the debate here). Today IT can no longer afford to be a handcrafted, artisanal pursuit. The efficiencies to be found in the cloud make sure of that.


As CIOs transform themselves into service brokers, we start to move very fast down the road of saying that IT is just complex contract and sourcing management. In effect, IT becomes another category in the supply chain. (And maybe this is why we currently see some CIOs reporting to the CFO, like other supply chain managers). I’ve even come across someone who was billing themselves as the IT category specialist in their supply chain organization, which is really interesting to me. And it’s got me thinking: If we simply say that IT is just a category in sourcing and vendor management, that’s provocative. But where does that get us?

IMG_1614-Edit_SML.jpgAs I mentioned in my last blog post, “One company’s management of IT financials in a Cloud era,” I attended this week the IT Financial Management Association Conference in Scottsdale, Arizona, and am blogging on two of the sessions. I’m hearing a lot that can really help both public and private IT executives, particularly around the financial management of cloud computing.

The next speaker I heard was from Georgia State University (GSU). He started by saying that GSU’s recent move from a central IT model to a cloud provider model has led IT to ask itself a number of questions.

Cox Enterprises presented first on the challenges as well as the lessons learned from moving to cloud based model. Just so it is clear, Cox’s cloud costing model is focused on budgeting. Cox Enterprises has multiple businesses within it including the cable that I know many of you love. However, from an IT perspective, Cox’s goal was to do cloud across all of its businesses units.

COBIT 5 Service Request & Incident to Increase Productivity & Minimize Service Disruptions

IMG_1614-Edit_SML.jpgIf you’ve been following my series of posts on COBIT 5, you know that I think this new release of the COBIT standard is going to help IT organizations achieve greater financial transparency, customer satisfaction, operational excellence, and future orientation. COBIT 5 also will make a difference in how IT organizations run their processes. Today, I will discuss the combined processes of service request and incident. COBIT 5 defines this process as providing timely and effective response to user request and resolution of all types of incidents. In terms of purposes, it aims to achieve increased productivity and minimize disruptions through quick resolution of user queries and incidents. Pretty amazing! 

What will the CIO become in the year 2020?

chapter1.PNGTechnology has profoundly transformed the world in recent years. In the last decade alone, mobility, cloud, social media and big data have changed the landscape of IT dramatically.  One group affected perhaps the most by the ever-changing landscape is the CIO. The next few years hold the potential for even more change.


In researching the topic I believe there are two factors that will continue to impact the role of IT in the future.  As more applications move to the cloud, as mobility and BYOD further infiltrate business, the control and purchase of IT is moving toward lines of business and application owners and away from the IT department.  At the same time, the IT department is transforming from a cost center that provides technology to a strategic department that provides essential technology services (whether in-house or brokered from elsewhere.)  I predict that 3 kinds of IT leaders will emerge.

IT leaders, the choice is yours: Be master of your destiny … or victim

I recently met with the CIO of a large Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) company, and the conversation turned to cloud. The CIO remarked, “I’ve never sat in front of a consultant who hasn’t said the word cloud.” “Fair enough,” I said. “Cloud is trendy, it’s a buzzword. But the way I see it, what this is really about is, do you want to be a victim, or do you want to be the master of your own destiny?” Suddenly I had the CIO’s attention. “And how does that relate to cloud?” the CIO asked.


Simple. In today’s environment, cloud service providers are going to your business and saying “We can run your business process more effectively, more efficiently, we can provide it on mobile devices, using cloud, et cetera.”


In this scenario IT can either become a victim or it can drive its own destiny.

IT transformation has become a buzzword in our industry. It’s an overused term. But I find that, like a lot of buzzwords, it’s really not well understood. People think they know what IT transformation means. But in many cases what they’re calling transformation is evolution: a large project with a series of small step increases such as automating, speeding things up, aligning better.
