How to create a performance scorecard for your business service management software

Better Myles.jpgI’ve written before about one CIO whose remarks about performance management have really stayed with me. Basically, he told me that to get the business transformation and ROI that he wants from an IT toolset, it’s necessary to have a performance management system to measure its benefits. In my last post, I talked about the importance of being able to measure the benefits of your quality management software. This week, I want to look at business service management (BSM) software.

Is social networking risky for the enterprise?

Maybe it’s because part of my day job is to interact with the IT community through my blog, Twitter and Facebook, but it seems to me that enterprise adoption of social media has quietly gone from being on the radical fringe to mainstream without as much as a “by your leave”.

The question is not if or when, but how  it's being used that is challenging IT and compliance executives in enterprises. I take a look at where you can learn more.

Are you able to measure the business value of your cloud services?

convcloud6.jpgA recurring topic on the Discover Performance blog is performance management – not only why it’s important (for one thing, to drive better business outcomes), but also how to get started. How do you show the value IT provides, what KPIs are relevant for what you’re trying to achieve and how do you get to continuous improvement?

The latest video in the “This Week in the Cloud” series tackles these questions through the lens of cloud services. Starting with the question of how cloud impacts business and IT alignment, hosts Paul Muller, chief software evangelist with HP Software, and Christian Verstraete, chief technologist of cloud strategy for HP, discuss approaches to measuring cloud performance and offer specific KPIs to track. (This is part 6 of 6, and the other videos are all well worth checking out.)

You hear the cliché all the time: People are our most important asset. But let’s actually look at that statement. If people are so important to your organization, how is that “asset” performing? Is it contributing to the objectives of the company? Is the performance of your human capital driving better business outcomes?

Today’s workforce is very different from what it was a generation or so ago. If you truly want to innovate, you’ve got to figure out how to motivate a 21st century workforce. Here are five things you can do to improve workforce performance.

Managers speak out about IT management and measurement

Better Myles.jpgLast week I participated in two roundtables attended by customers in healthcare and public sector. The topic for both was IT management and, in particular, a discussion around what one area would you like improve in your organization in terms of management and measurement. A number of the comments coming from this question were fascinating, because they illuminate what many in IT are going through right now.
