An Agile Manifesto for enterprise IT

How can enterprise IT become more agile? This question is one I constantly get from customers as I meet with them in IT transformation workshops.  IT is under intense pressure to release applications at a pace that enables the business to remain competitive. And in answer, we’ve seen the rise of Agile development. But Agile principles really work best in small teams. When you try to scale up those principles to large enterprises it’s a challenge.


With my colleagues in HP ALM and HP Software Professional Services, I’ve been working on defining what the agile enterprise looks like and how traditional IT organizations can get there.

Change management: The CIO’s nightmare or dream-come-true?

As CIOs are at the forefront of process and technology, change management must be a skill in the IT leader’s toolkit. Managing change has never been an easy task, with the accompanying natural human resistance as well as the organizational politics at play every organization to some degree. Successful changes manage to overcome the resistance or circumvent it entirely. Without a strong sponsor and commitment from the top, change management could be a touchy journey. Traditionally change management has followed a top-down approach. I call the traditional change management compulsive as it may not be initially acceptable to all of those involved, and it requires a carefully crafted approach.

Don’t pay it again - SAM.


At this time of year, approaching Year End, annual budget plans start to solidify alongside annual audit cycles. For IT departments, these two processes are usually inherently linked. As IT and finance teams drive this joint review, when it comes to software they essentially look to answer four simple questions “How much are our software licenses costing us?”, “Where and how is it all being used?” “Can our usage be optimized?” and “What else will we need next year?”


Unfortunately, with the sprawl of virtual machines, the growing adoption of flexible, cloud-based delivery models and the wide adoption of multi-sourced services have made these seemingly straightforward questions increasingly difficult to answer, particularly for software.  Welcome to the challenge of Software Asset Management (SAM).


Modernization can be a lifesaver for CIOs drowning in the maintenance pool

On CIO Forum, I wrote a post titled Are you committing career suicide? that quoted liberally from Bob Evans’ recent thoughtful article in Forbes titled Career Suicide and the CIO: 4 Deadly New Threats. In that article, Evans’ fourth deadly threat is “Surrendering to the 80/20 budget trap.” He describes the issue this way:


“…unless CIOs lead the way in reducing the portion of their overall IT budgets now spent on low-value infrastructure and keeping the lights on (it’s typically between 70% and 80%), then they will never liberate the funds necessary to invest in and create customer-facing applications and other innovative approaches to growth and engagement.”

C-suite shakeup: Where should Big Data fit in your org chart?


Big Data may be headed for the C-suite. A new McKinsey Quarterly article suggests that something like a CDO, a chief data officer, may be following such innovations as the CFO, CMO, and CSO (that’s chief strategy officer to those of us who didn’t get the memo). Enterprises have been adjusting their org charts since the ’80s, adding C-level executives as the market landscape has shifted.


The article’s writers, Brad Brown, David Court and Paul Willmott, see Big Data and analytics fueling the next tectonic shift in business, noting that “once again companies may need more top-management muscle” in the C-suite to successfully harness the power of advanced analytics.


Big Data and next-gen analytics span “a wide range of functions, including marketing, risk and operations,” say the McKinsey authors, and will cause the C-suite to “evolve in a variety of ways. In some cases, the solution will be to enhance the mandate of the chief information, marketing, strategy, or risk officer.

Some SmartDevices will succeed and some will "fail" - view SmartDevices as experiments

quirky.jpgI believe that we need to see smartdevices as experiments. Some will success, and some will fail. But importantly, the ones that "fail" may well be stepping stones to smartdevices that succeed. Just like with mobile gaming, it's hard to know what will work and what won't - we need to just put things out there and see.


And so, we need to be agile in our development and very fast and "360 degree" in our collection of feedback. By "360 degree", I mean that we need to collect both structured and unstructured data (especially social media sentiment) on our smartdevice experiments.

How Communications Service Providers can use Big Data

This blog discusses how communications service providers (CSPs) can use Big Data. While CSPs are swimming in call details records, these are not the only source of data that CSPs can use. For example, customer feedback telephone calls, click-stream and social media streams can provide insight into the CSPs products, the likelyhood of customer churn and attempts at fraud. 

One CIO’s change management journey

Lately, I find that my career has changed to the point that I am more of a change manager than an IT professional. When approaching an initiative, I first consider: Whose lives am I changing for the better? If the answer makes business sense, I go proceed with the initiative, subject to constraints imposed by the ecosystem.


When I look back, my interest in change management started in 1995 when I was working for a chemical plant that produced synthetic yarn. Although I was a programmer analyst, I enjoyed the significant piece of responsibility of keeping the lights on for production, warehouse, and stores—ensuring that enhancements were carried out and business expectations were met.

CIOs and CMOs: Bridging the Big Data divide


Big Data is blazing into enterprises—but it’s not all smooth sailing. In one corner office, the CIO approaches Big Data as the master of IT analytics and business data. In another corner office, the CMO is anxious to leverage a self-service tool that promises unprecedented customer insight. We recently brought together representatives from the two corner offices for our webcast “CIOs and CMOs: Who’s biggest on Big Data?


Technology analyst Michael Krieger hosted the webcast, and put the situation in clear perspective. Big data vendors are appealing directly to the lines of business, “even perhaps more so to the marketing [department] and CMO than anywhere else, bypassing traditional IT departments,” Krieger said. “But how does it all come together integrating with existing IT-owned or managed databases, applications and middleware?”

What’s your CIO CIQ (competency intelligence quotient)?

Not long ago, I attended some panel discussions and participated in some blogs about CIO competencies. The conversations focused on the top competencies for today’s IT leaders; the ideas were original and intriguing, as they diverged from many of the notions bandied about on popular blogs. Here are some highlights:


Information management: While in India we are embroiled in the discussion on whether the CIO is a business leader or a technology steward, I came to know that in Europe the CIO is a distinctive role that is separate from technology.

Perusing most social media, especially the steady stream of tweets and Facebook posts, I can empathize with the very prolific Nouwen’s friend; I have the same reaction to thousands of my fellow human beings. Is there anything some people won’t — or don’t — say about themselves?
