My 5 favorite new features in HP Executive Scorecard 9.3

For those of you that have been reading my Discover Performance blogs, you know I have been suggesting that a balanced scorecard methodology applies to IT management and that this approach can help drive world class IT organizations with greater IT effectiveness, better business alignment, and lower cost. Or in HP lingo, it is about making it matter. A key underpinning of making this reality involves doing three things:

 

1)      eliminating the development timeline

2)      using data that customers already have

3)      setting measurable goals covering the full spectrum of IT functions

HP is focused on reducing the time to get started

At HP, we have put together a product and services which together dramatically reduce the time to value for creating and managing an IT balanced scorecard. From the software perspective, we have prebuilt the key functions of pulling data, warehousing the data, and presenting the data as value-added information. Currently, the HP solution pulls data automatically from the following data sources: application lifecycle management, project & portfolio management, service management, business service management, asset management, information management, network management, and infrastrastructure automation compliance.

 

The result is a real-time performance management called the HP IT Executive Scorecard, which pulls data, warehouses it and then presents the data in a way that gives you a clear view of how your IT organization is performing.

 

Today, HP announced the release of the next version of Executive Scorecard. There are  five new features in the release that are particularly exciting. But the most important walk away message is that now it is even easier to get started managing your IT performance.

 

Easily create new KPIs

Near the top of my list for most exciting new feature is the KPI import wizard. I like this so much because customers typically have many sources for key metrics and KPIs that are not attachable to Extract Transform and Load. This can include questionaires or business measures relating to IT. In the wizard the person simply selects a spreadsheet, for example, to load and then selects the measures from the spreadsheet to create KPIs. It is very cool, quick, and easy to do. Another important capability is the ability to create content packs, i.e. something anyone can package together for another Executive Scorecard user to implement and use in their environment This is exciting because we expect partners will leverage their expertise in specific areas and embed this in content packs to provide something unique to their customers.

 

Filtering makes data analysis faster

One of interesting elements to end users is the ability to use filters. This makes KPI analysis even more valuable. Imagine that you are a service manager or PMO leader. In this role, you need to go from diagnosing a problem to root cause analysis. With filtering, I can see that the percent of SLAs being delivered has reduced month over month or maybe the percent of projects on schedule has reduced month over month. I could then take a dimensional slice of this and see all related KPIs along a particular dimension such as location or at a particular service and see its % of SLA delivery, cost of delivery, MTTR, and the list goes on.

 

Added out-of-the-box dashboards

There are also additional out-of-the-box dashboards for security and cloud. What I think is exciting here is that the security dashboard shows leading indicators for security performance. Many security dashboards focus on backward-facing so called lagging indicators. (See my post about leading versus lagging indicators.) I’ve heard from many customers that they need something to help the ordinary IT manager understand how their groups are impacting security. There are plenty of good tools out there for security specialists (like the new Enterprise View tool from HP’s security team) but there is not much out there for the regular IT manager who wants to understand security performance alongside the performance of their own area of interst. And the cloud dashboard can provide consistent measurements for on-premise or cloud options to provide apples-to-apples comparisons. In this way it shows the benefit of moving to either a cloud or virtualization strategy. Clearly here, cloud and virtualization is all about standardization in order to increase the responsiveness and decrease the cost of IT.

 

Merger with financial planning and analysis

With this release HP’s financial planning and analysis (FPA) solution is merged into Executive Scorecard. This means that users can move from process performance analysis to financial performance analysis within one tool. It means that you can see financial KPIs directly within Executive Scorecard. One CIO put the value of this to me this way: You can’t understand the performance of process without the financials and you can’t understand the value financials without process. It also adds the performance management perspective to HP’s IT Financial Management solution. So an IT finance person, using the executive scorecard for IT finance tasks such as creating a bill of IT or managing the budget creation process can also now take advantage of the executive scorecard performance perspectives.

 

Mutitenancy Support

Lastly, we have provided support for outside service providers that need to provide better and more frequent reporting to their customers. These vendors can provide scorecards and dashboards to key customers either as service or as a deliverable to an existing outsourced relationship.
