Kicking off Discover Performance

Welcome to the first post of the Discover Performance blog – what I hope will become one of your “go to” places for enterprise IT executives who share a passion for performing better.

Manage IT by measuring IT

So, why the focus on performance? In my experience as a manager, I believe that you truly do get what you inspect, not what you expect. Unless you’re managing your IT through a system of measures and continuous improvement, the only thing you can safely expect is heartache. As an industry, IT has transformed every process and function of a modern enterprise – except IT itself.

It’s time to get our own houses in order. When an organization is operating with a transparent, consistent and coherent system of measures, they’ve finally got a decision basis for driving meaningful transformation, tackling such questions as:

  • Cloud vs. traditional provisioning
  • “Bring your own device” vs. managed devices
  • Agile vs. waterfall project delivery
  • Retain vs. retire applications and data
  • Risk vs. cost of securing services

Discovering your performance is the pivot point for success.

Deliver results in a time of change

I spend a great deal of my time traveling and talking to customers and IT vendors from all over the globe. So I get to hear the hype and see the pain points up close and personal. I can barely recognize my own industry from 10 years ago – Ruby, Erlang, Scrumfall, NoSQL, Sharding, Continuous Delivery, DevOps, Python, IaaS/PaaS/SaaS even Ice-Cream Sandwiches (thank Android for the last one) – it’s a time of incredible, exciting and overwhelming change. What hasn’t changed is the need to deliver results.

And that’s what this blog is all about, bringing together professionals passionate about sharing what they’ve learned from great (and, not so great) performances.

We’ll be looking at these and other questions as we get going:

•             How do you define, cascade and measure IT goals?

•             How can IT executives accelerate tomorrow’s innovation AND deliver on today’s commitments?

•             How do you optimize your sourcing strategy?

•             How do you communicate IT value and risk to the business?
