Complex IT, made simple

I don’t do New Year’s resolutions - but once again this year I made a personal commitment to “Add more value by focusing on what really matters.”  The problem is, with IT today playing such a transformative role in driving business change, more and more of what we all do “really matters”. In fact, it’s business critical.  At the same time we are increasingly dependent on third party service providers to help us deliver. The simple fact is we are all struggling more than ever to find time to manage a multitude of vendors and a complex mix of systems to ensure we get value for money and maintain the highest quality of services, whilst still finding the bandwidth and resources to drive innovation.

Complex Environment

Regardless of the size of your business there has never been more to think about in terms of technology management – ageing applications, the cloud, mobile, and social media are all adding to the growing list of concerns for IT executives. In my last post I asked the question, ‘Do you know the average time spent on managing IT vendors?’ Well it turns out the answer is a staggering 13.5 per cent!

With so much pressure to manage this complex mix of systems, IT needs to evolve its approach to survive in an increasingly multi-sourced, hybrid delivery environment.  I see so many customers who are looking for a system which enables them to efficiently manage change across their entire IT environment, both internal and outsourced, without losing overall control. With Gartner saying that a ‘right sourced’ multi-vendor delivery model which includes cloud can lead to savings of 40%, there is clearly room to drive more value from suppliers.

Value in Knowledge

At HP we have been working on a Service Integration and Management (SIAM) solution which draws on the expertise of our Professional Services team to help our customers transform IT within their organisations. We are seeing some great results; witnessing cost reductions in the range of 10-20% with SIAM clients. On top of this we are seeing additional savings coming from other cost reducing factors – the consolidation of help desks or data centres and the outsourcing of vertical functions to a cloud or provider. In fact we have just signed another European customer and I am pleased to be able to share with you its reasons for selecting HP.

Customer Experience

As a global enterprise working in the health care, agriculture and high-tech material markets, the customer needed help in supporting, improving and taking charge of its IT and business services centre. IT was responsible for a portfolio ranging from infrastructure, systems integration and application development through to areas of procurement, logistics, human resources, management, finance, and accounting.

On top of this the customer had decided to move away from the traditional in-house delivery of IT services to a multi supplier scenario requiring the cooperation of several suppliers in order to deliver services to the business.

By using HP SIAM the company was able to reduce the complexity of its system by targeting the key processes for handling and optimising a multi-supplier environment. By providing it with the transparency and visibility to proactively manage and monitor IT service delivery and SLAs, we were able to put the power back in the customer’s hands.

In my next post I will discuss the value to businesses of becoming agile. With the Project Management Institute reporting that the use of agile tripled from 2008 to 2011, what percentage of projects did Gartner predict would be using agile by end of 2012? Join me next time to find out…

In the meantime if you have any questions about SIAM, or perhaps some tips on IT management you would like to share, please post them below.
