purged Data Protector IDB, consistency check takes very long now

Hi all,

I have recently done a few purge jobs on our Data Protector IDB (sessions, file names, dcbf, mpos), most of them  as described in HP's document "HP Data Protector IDB Purge best practices".

Now, when I backup the IDB the consistency check of the Catalog Database takes about 13 minutes opposed to less than 4 minutes before the purge.

The other consistency checks' (Key and Media Management Database) durations have remained the same.

Is anyone able to give me a good reason for this behaviour and - even better - tell me how I can revert the check's duration back to normal?

The environment is DP 6.21 with latest patches on a Windows Server 2003 Std. as the cell server.

Looking forward to your answers!

As soon as possible after a purge you need to export and import to tidy up the database.

omnidbutil -writedb followed by omnidb -readdb

If you need more details please say what platform your Cell Manager is.

Re: purged Data Protector IDB, consistency check takes very long now

Jeremy,

OK, I have not been aware of the fact that export/import is a must.

My Cell Manager is a Windows Server 2003 Std. machine with an IDB backup's size of about 5.7 GB

And I'd very much appreciate detailed instructions of how to do the export/import because I have already read quite a bit about this but let me put it this way: there seem to be a lot of different opinions about how to export/import ;-)

Re: purged Data Protector IDB, consistency check takes very long now

Hi ,

This is the procedure in order to do the IDB maintenance.

IDB maintenance procedure:

Stop the services

Create a copy of the DB40 directory in another site in your harddrive.

Start the services

Please run the following commands:
omnidb -strip
Omnidbutil –purge –filenames –days 1  -force
Omnidbutil –purge –sessions 1  -force
Omnidbutil –purge –messages 1  -force
Omnidbutil –purge –DCBF –days 1  -force
omnidbutil -purge_failed_copies

Create the folder c:\IDBtemp in windows

Please run the following commands:
Omnidbutil –writedb –mmdb c:\IDBtemp -cdb c:\IDBtemp
Omnidbutil –readdb –mmdb c:\IDBtemp -cdb c:\IDBtemp

omnidbutil -remap_dcdir
omnidbutil -fixmpos
omnidbutil -remap_dcdir
omnidbutil -cdbsync <cell manager name>

Regards

Hi Eblyn are these IDB maintenance steps also okay to run on DP version 8?

Re: purged Data Protector IDB, consistency check takes very long now

DP 8 has a 'autovacuum' feature which makes it un-necessary to do the 'writedb/readdb' any more.  As a matter of fact, I looked at the command-line arguments for 'omnidbutil' and neither 'writedb' nor 'readdb' are options any more

-autovacuum

Recovers or reuses disk space occupied by updated or deleted rows. The vacuum operation

(periodic maintenance) is done automatically.

There are a number of options for this that I am not going to post here, but you can read in the CLI (Command Line Interpreter) guide

Re: purged Data Protector IDB, consistency check takes very long now

Great information thanks.

Just wondering if this procedure applies for version 7 also?

We upgraded from 6.11 to 7 last year, cell manager is HP-ux 11.31.  I find the IDB verify time verify time long & also increases to twice the amount of time now & then.

We have some permanently protected backups in our system, I persume these purge commands only purge expired data/files?
