online backup Oracle 10g RH AS 3.0

Hi,

I've got the following setup:

DP cell manager 5.1 fully patched on HPUX11i
Oracle 10g on Redhat Advanced server 3.0, DP client is fully patched as well.

The online backup of the Oracle database looks fine, however an error is reported during the backup.

There is a problem when a channel dev_0 must be released, so RMAN disables the channel and will use another one for the remaining of the backups:

[Normal] From: OB2BAR_Oracle8@your.server.com "db" Time: 11/22/04 15:45:12
Completed OB2BAR Backup: 05 your.server.com:ora_linux<542911323:1>.dbf // Oracle8

[Major] From: OB2BAR_Oracle8@your.server.com "db" Time: 11/22/04 15:45:12
Cannot start DBSM ()

[Major] From: OB2BAR_Oracle8@your.server.com "db" Time: 11/22/04 15:45:12
Cannot start DBSM ()

RMAN-03009: failure of backup command on dev_0 channel at 11/22/2004 16:45:12
ORA-19509: failed to delete sequential file, handle="ora_linux<542911323:1>.dbf", parms="ENV=(OB2BARTYPE=Oracle8,OB2APPNAME=db,OB2BARLIST=ora_linux)"
ORA-27027: sbtremove2 returned error
ORA-19511: Error received from media manager layer, error text:
Vendor specific error: OB2_StartQueries() failed ERR(-2)
ORA-27206: requested file not found in media management catalog
channel dev_0 disabled, job failed on it will be run on another channel

The full session messages are in attach. Anybody knows what the errors are about.

The backup of all tablespaces is succesfull, but the session completes with errors.

thanks for any responses,

Kurt

Re: online backup Oracle 10g RH AS 3.0

Cannot start DBSM? DBSM runs on the cell manager, spawned by CRS at the request of OB2BAR. Anything in the debug.log on the cell manager?

Thanks,

Re: online backup Oracle 10g RH AS 3.0

I don't find any messages related to the issue in the debug.log file on the cell manager.

It's the first time I see an error like this, but there is a first time for everything of course.

If required, we'll open a call at HP and Oracle. It's hard to tell if it is an Oracle or DP issue. But the error occurs at the two Oracle instances that are running on the Linux server.

Re: online backup Oracle 10g RH AS 3.0

Well, I'd say it's our problem. The DBSM is not getting started, and so the following commands about sbtremove2 failing, etc. would all seem to stim from there not being a database connection by which it can interact with the database (why it's not using the BSM is a question though).

Yeah, this would be one where I'd just take debugs and let X tell me what's going on. Particularly if it's reproducible.

Just set OB2OPTS in the instance config file to get the OB2BAR debugs. And restart the services in debug mode to get the CRS debugs. And start up INET in debug mode on both the client and cell manager. And then run the backup in debug mode of course. I always run 1-500 for DP, but if the backup is actually working, things will get big.

Good luck,

Re: online backup Oracle 10g RH AS 3.0

Scott,

I'll ask the customer to open a call for it. I can't access there site, so can't do any further debugging at the moment. But I didn't find anything on Oracle metalink either and the problem indeed starts when the DBSM can't be started any more.

I'll update the thread when I've got some more news.

I found a reference on metalink, but I thought you had already looked there.

In note 246180.1 they talk about an incorrect ORACLE_VERSION parameter in Data Protector.

Is this a new installation ? Or has it worked correclty before ?

Re: online backup Oracle 10g RH AS 3.0

Thanks Wim,

I didn't read the note yet, but I'll check the ORACLE_VERSION in the config file to be sure.

It is a new (Linux) server with a clean installation of Oracle. And it is the first time the backup of it was taken through DP.

Re: online backup Oracle 10g RH AS 3.0

@Wim

The ORACLE_VERSION was correct in the config files.

We'll open a call at HP, looks like a (minor) bug.
