Backup Data Compatibality

Hi,

I have a Production System with Oracle Database running on HP-Ux 11i platform and would have DR with Oracle Databse running on Solaris 11. Curently I use Data Protector 6 at the Production to backup database and files into LTO 5.

If I used Data Protector at DR mostl likely latest version, can it read and restore the backup data on LTO5 from Production?

Another option, If I used different Backup Software at DR for example Symantec NetBackup or EMC Networker, can it read and restore the backup data on LTO5 from Production?

Hope somebody out there have the answer.

Regards.

I seriously doubt that a database on HP-UX will work on Oracle Solaris.

Is the endianness the same?  Does it have the same floating point format, IEEE?

Re: Backup Data Compatibility

I am not sure on Floating Point Format. But we did backup and restore using Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN) from Production to DR,  it works. But not sure whether it works or not using the 3rd party backup software.

Were you able to successfully get the data out of your database?

Yes, it recognised the data.

Re: Backup Data Compatibility

I understand your problem as, "Can later versions of Data protector restore a backup done via a previous version?"

If this is correct then the answer is yes.  But it does depend upon how old the earlier version is.  The versions you specify are compatible (earlier to later).  The other way round (later to earlier versions) I can't be sure of.

Hope this helps,

John
