Leveraging Universal Discovery for Oracle Compliance

Recently, the Universal Discovery (UD) Product Management team released a new product called "UD for Oracle LMS."

Since its release this past Spring, the buzz for Oracle compliance activities has been gaining more and more traction across the CMS community.

What exactly is this new product, though?

Oracle Compliance.jpgTo better introduce the topic, you could think of UD for Oracle LMS as a short way to say, "Universal Discovery discovers the components within Oracle compliance and License Management Services (LMS) activities."

Furthermore, it could be thought of as an extension of the types of compliance or licensing activities which take place within the Asset Management space, i.e. license management, tru-ups or capturing license waste.

All of the discovery via UD for Oracle LMS, along with the HP Asset Management SAM compliance and licensing activities, make up the HP Oracle Compliance use case and solution.

So, how can this benefit your discovery initiative or become a continuation for asset management activities?

One of the biggest challenges customers face today is the amount of time it takes to run Oracle LMS. With the use of Universal Discovery as your Oracle "verified" approach, customers who have identified the pre-requisite IP ranges, Oracle Ports, and Credentials identified are able to facilitate the discovery of their Oracle environment in significantly less time. And, when I reference a shorter period of time, I'm referring to an immediate return of data upon turning on the discovery jobs versus the weeks of effort it can take with manual effort or data collection--which is costly, time consuming, and prone to human error.

Another aspect or challenge to ensuring compliance for your Oracle environment is when a breach of contract or violation takes place. If unauthorized or unlicensed Oracle software is identified--it doesnt matter if the install was unintentional--there is the possibility of hefty fines and paying full price for licenses. With the UD for Oracle LMS module, customers are able to proactively leverage discovery in advance of their annual Oracle audit. This provides a greater sense of confidence when the audit does take place, much less the re-negoation of any ELA's or tru-ups with Oracle as an output.

To learn more about this topic, I've included an HP Data Sheet (attached below).

What are your thoughts on Oracle license compliance? Have you experienced the pain of discovering unlicensed software during an audit? Did you wish that there was an easier solution at the time? I would love to hear from you. Feel free to leave me a comment in the section below with details of your experience.
