Service models for operations and business service management are tricky to design. They need to have right amount of skinny-is-in.pngdetail as well as allow drill-down and drill-up capabilities to get to the so-called 'root-cause' and impacted set. And to top that pre-requisite, the service models must not be too big that they become unmanageable and cause the management software system to perform poorly.

 

There are several reasons why a service model bloats up in size and depth, and one primary reason is the presence of unused/irrelevant configuration items (CIs). Basically bad models where the technical dogma overpowers the service relation and motive can lead to large in-depth representations of computer systems. This scenario can prove to be a headache for the operations bridge team in resolving the problem.
