HP (mobile) on HP - A New Style of Demo

A few months before HP Discover we contacted the R&D group that developed the mobile native application for the event and we told them about our solution and offered to collaborate with them.

We had a few sync meetings between the teams and two weeks before the event, after the mobile developers completed their task, they delivered the Android application package file (APK) to us (This application allows users to easily navigate the event and find the speakers they are looking for at HP Discover).

We quickly and easily instrumented this file to get a new signed APK. The instrumentation added by Real User Monitor (RUM) does not change the way the application functions and no code changes are required!

Again both teams did some final testing and after approval we uploaded the signed APK to Google Play. (The same process was done for an iOS version for the App Store.)

Our HP Discover application utilized the ability of RUM that begins to collect comprehensive data for you as soon as users interact with your application. A few days before the event, hundreds of customers started to download the application to their mobile devices and when they started interacting with the mobile app, RUM collected comprehensive data and utilized its unique application performance montioring capabilities. .

During the week of Discover, the amount of traffic was huge! I am so excited about the results that I want to share with you the summary (and this is just for Android devices) that we saw:

  • More than 20K sessions.
  • 160 crashes – This gives us something to improve upon
  • 30 different devices
  • Most popular devices : Samsung Galaxy III, Nexus 5, HTC and Samsung Galaxy S4
  • 150 carriers; most popular: AT&T, T-Mobile, Version Wireless and Sprint
  • 35 percent of the traffic was via WiFi

All this impressive data was presented on the demo system we used in the BSM booth, and also in the Monitor Enterprise Mobile Applications booth. Moreover, this impressive demo was also presented by Ajay Singh and Norm Follett at the main stage keynote address.

We are pleased that even though this was a demo system with minimum resources, everything worked smoothly and thousands of users were monitored daily by this BSM instance.

This is certainly a success story, and as I mentioned at the beginning, it is one of the easiest ways to demonstrate our product by using a topical use case that is relevant to everyone.
