HP SiteScope custom monitors and content packaging

HP SiteScope is an agentless application and infrastructure monitoring software solution containing several out of the box useful monitors for common systems or applications in the IT world. Though those monitors are generic and their thresholds can be configured.  They are dedicated to specific systems (product defined), so in case you need to monitor your own custom system, you’ll need a more flexible solution.


Would it be great to easily implement your own SiteScope monitors, according to your own needs?  What about defining your own metrics, choosing metric names and create new thresholds based on them?


As from SiteScope 11.20, SiteScope provides a new set of highly customizable monitor framework that enables you to implement monitors according to your own needs. Those monitors are generic and flexible monitors that can call Java Jars, get metric information, and define SiteScope metrics and thresholds using JavaSciprt API.


Custom monitors help SiteScope to become a more flexible product and can be very useful when the other, out of the box, monitors just don’t fit. Those monitors are supported on template mode and integrate with HP BSM as all other “regular” monitors.


Here are few basic steps that can help you to create your first custom monitor:


1.  Choose the desired custom monitor in the new monitors panel according to your need:




2.  Write JavaScript for executing the monitor logic (WMI queries, retrieving data from DB, read\write for file etc.) and copy it into the “custom monitor settings panel” in monitor configuration form.


You can configure predefined parameters to be used in your script (to avoid hardcoded values) under “script parameters table” panel.


3.  Create a workspace folder for your monitor by pressing “create path” button. This folder is created under <SiteScope_home>\packages\workspace and should contain all the external files that are needed for this monitor to run (jar, .class, properties files etc.)




4.  Save and run the monitor (your custom metric will appear on dashboard)


5.  Set appropriate thresholds for this monitor above the monitor metrics




That’s it, congratulations! You’ve just implemented your first custom monitor.
