A hop, step and jump to monitoring and optimizing your virtual environment

I have been asked the question a few times in the past and felt it best to clarify what exactly the HP Software Operations Management stack offers for monitoring and optimization of virtualized environments. There are 3 products that are offered - Service Health Optimizer, Virtual Performance Viewer and the Virtual Infrastructure Smart PlugIn for HP Operations Manager.

Understand at a glance what is offered today

And finally, how different are these software work designs?

  • SHO is clearly for (virtualized datacenter) efficiency analysis, best left to that capacity management expert in your virtualized datacenter.
  • vPV is for the virtualization performance expert who spots the problem or is contacted when there’s an emergent issue relating to certain VMs.
  • VISPI with the Operations Manager / Agent aids in finding out performance problems, raising alerts for these, correlating with vCenter events and offering instruction / advice to the operator to fix the issue.

Keep in mind that VISPI/Ops Agent has the most wide virtualization hypervisor support matrix covering UNIX virtualization too - AIX LPAR, Solaris Containers and HP "vPar VMs".

Note that the escalation route is also in a similar manner – a problem that VISPI has reported can go into triage mode with the help of vPV and its versatile workbench view. Such triage and drill-down could result in identification of sub-optimal allocation of resources (probably other VMs in the same datastore, doing high IOPS) which is then analyzed in SHO. See a sample workflow below.

Being a  fan of James Bond movies, I can't resist saying how interesting it is that we have in the mix here, all the characters from an 007 movie – the agent, the SPI, the viewer (reconnoiterer) and finally an optimizer (the right-sizer, hitman, call it what you will…). Where's that martini now?

Hello Ramkumar, thank you for the nice overview of the HP virtualization products.

OK, so can I cross-launch between these products? Or have alerts feeding from one into the other?

We have cross-launch between products.  For example, vPV can drill-down into the performance inside the guest that is managed by OM, such as where you want to analyse which processes are consuming the resources such as memory, CPU, etc.

Also it is possible to launch the vPV UI from a OM or OMi alert. vPV supports integration with BSM too.

Hey Ram, great one. I am looking forward to know more on sHO and related stuffs. I would like to write about them on my Blog (http://Amitabh-vWorld.Com ) too... I already wrote one on HP vPV. Keep up the good work!
