PXE Error T04 Access Violation one specific HP model, 500B

[ Edited ]

Hey,

I'm trying to boot from PXE TFTP,

i have 3 computer models to test this form,

HP DX2300

HP DX2200

HP 500B

the DX are able to boot from PXE to TFTP, the HP500B can't and give's this error,

all computers are configured the same way in DHCP with options 066 and 067 (the PXE options in DHCP),

all computers go through the same switch, i tried from the same port as well, only 500B fails.

i have upgraded firmware of bios to 6.05A (latest from JAN2011), still no luck on 500B,

i tried multiple computers from the 500B model, no luck.

What can be the problem?

Update (08/14/2011):

i have used wireshark to monitor the traffic and i was able to get this:

seems to me like the model 500B  asks for the PXE boot file like the DX2300

1	0.000000	10.1.83.129	10.1.0.4	TFTP	81	Read Request, File: SMSboot\x86\wdsnbp.com, Transfer type: octet, tsize\000=0\000

and is being acknowledged by tftp server (which is a windows server 2008 r2 with SCCM 2007 SP2 R3 with WDS Services and PXE role,

then it asks for some weird file which isn't available:

4	0.001386	10.1.83.129	10.1.0.4	TFTP	65	Read Request, File: \003, Transfer type: octet, blksize\000=1456\000

and when i check the tracing that i enabled i see it's looking for

[3208] 15:34:53: [28797][WDSTFTP] CTftpServer::GetFilePath: Local Path=e:\RemoteInstall\

this" " sign is interpreted as 003,

i don't know what else to do, only this model isn't working,

Has anyone one ran into this before?

Update 2 (08/15/2011):

i'm surprised to see no one has ever encountered this, if this is the wrong forum to ask then please moderators let me know, thanks

Now, regarding this issue,

i have downloaded an external PXE rom called gPXE from http://rom-o-matic.net/

and guess what it works fine,  i'm stumped on how to resolve this now that this worked and upgrading the bios didn't, the onboard lan is "Realtek RTL8102E/RTL8103E Family PCI-E Fast Ethernet NIC"

Suggestions?

Re: PXE Error T04 Access Violation one specific HP model, 500B

Oh yes, this is definitely a NIC ROM firmware bug. Every 500B has it. We have a park of many these machines and now facing terrible problems planning to make them thin clients.

The only fix I found for now is to fake TFTP reply, by making the server to send bootloader instead of every nonexistent file requested. So workstation requests pxelinux.0, then this strange-one-char file, gets the same pxelinux.0 for it, and then boot OK. Yeah, I've tried to send something else instead of bootloader to this request and no it doesn't boot. So obviously this is a 500B MT NIC ROM bug to request some strange file after DHCP assigned and try to boot it. And it affects every 500B MT.

Just to let you know we had to see IP helper and only then it worked,

still, other models were succesfull without this.

Re: PXE Error T04 Access Violation one specific HP model, 500B

This sounds like a possible PXE Option ROM bug to me.

If anyone is still having this problem, please call HP and open a support ticket.  Then, IM the ticket number to me and I'll see that it get's escalated.

Thanks,

/D

Has anyone been able to get this fixed?  We have a lot of the 500B series computers and they all have the same problem.

Re: PXE Error T04 Access Violation one specific HP model, 500B

Please give this a try,

Here is a link to a softpaq containing 6.10a Rev. A of the system BIOS that should work for the 500B.  The new BIOS contains a newer PXE Agent for the Realtek LOM.

Softpaq Link: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp62501-63000/sp62679.exe

Instructions for how to apply the update are contained within the executable archive.

Re: PXE Error T04 Access Violation one specific HP model, 500B

Hi,

i gave that update a try on a 500B, and it installed, but now the machine doesnt detect any USB devices.  Im guessing its not quite right for this model.

for reference, the 500b i just upgraded had v6.07 on before i tried to upgrade it.

Please advise how to downgrade the bios without a keyboard.

Thanks,

Karl

Re: PXE Error T04 Access Violation one specific HP model, 500B

Hi,

I have the same issue here. I have tried the BIOS linked here:ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp62501-63000/sp62679.exe but it refuses to install on our 500B's saying something about not being compatible. Is there anything else that I can do?

This BIOS version not support Compaq 500B MT (motherboard h-ig41-uatx), but support HP 500B MT (motherboard h-i41-uatx). Where find BIOS to motherboard h-ig41-uatx? Some computers in my company is Compaq 500B MT, and problem not solved.

We add to SCCM HP WinPE Driver Pack WinPE4 (see http://h20331.www2.hp.com/Hpsub/us/en/down-library.html ) and problem has solved. Sorry, my english bad.
