HP xw4300 Workstation Windows XP SP 2 Install Fail

Windows XP SP2 Installation fails with "cannot find a hard drive". The BIOS detects the hard drive, and a RedHat Install CD can also detect the drive. How can I get Windows XP to recognize the drive? This HP has a Western Digital Raptor 74.3GB drive, and no floppy drive.

Thanks,

Joe

Hmmmmm, I gather you mean XP Pro,...did you install service pack 1 first, as well as pre-install updates ? Check the links below, for further info.

That Raptor is probably a SATA or SCSI drive & needs a driver (F6) when Windows install first begins.

Re: HP xw4300 Workstation Windows XP SP 2 Install Fail

OK, I checked & this system has a SATA (Serial ATA) hard drive. During Windows Setup, you must press F6 to install a driver for the SATA drive. The drivers are certainly available for download from HP. You can put them on a floppy & when you press F6 during setup, the drivers will load & Windows XP installation will complete normally.

Sorry,...Looks like I may have misunderstood the question. Looks like Dave has it covered. Here is your update page, if needed, just pick your OS.

Re: HP xw4300 Workstation Windows XP SP 2 Install Fail

Thanks, that worked. Who would have thought that an external floppy drive would actually be useful one day? I got the drivers here:

ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/SP32501-33000/SP32521.exe

Here is the readme document: ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/SP32501-33000/SP32521.txt

Hi,
I got the same problem but with different disk packs. I do notknow what kind of disks are installed (HP 250GB SATA 7200rpm written on HP delivery note).
I tried 'Intel Matrix Storage Manager SATA RAID/AHCI Driver (32-Bit)' but without success. Can anybody help ?

What can one do if he/she doesn't have a floopy drive installed on the Computer (HP xw4300- trying to do a clean/fresh install of MS XP from MediaNet disks)

Re: HP xw4300 Workstation Windows XP SP 2 Install Fail

Hi Allyn,

Try setting the SATA Emulation in the BIOS under Storage > Storage Options tp Combined IDE Controller. This will allow you to install XP onto the SATA hard-drive without using the "F6 driver floppy option"

Once XP is installed, install the various software such a chipset support and then you should be able to change the SATA emulation back to for example seperate IDE controller.

Jim

Re: HP xw4300 Workstation Windows XP SP 2 Install Fail

This seems to be the perfect thread for a follow-on question. I also have a xw4300 that I cam trying to rebuild. My HD is a Fujitsu MAT330NP SCSI u320, connected to the LSI Logic SCSI card that came with the system. I have downloaded the LSI drivers from the downloads page for the xw4300 and loaded them (by pressng f6 and selecting the LSI SCSI miniport driver), but Windows 2000 install still fails due to not finding a hard drive.

The SCSI BIOS finds the drive properly (it comes up during POST), and the MB BIOS sees the drive (as I can see it while setting the boot order within the BIOS), but Windows won't see it. I tried chatting with HP tech support but they were stumped when I told them that I had been using the driver downloaded from their web site.

To futher complicte things, I did try the recovery CD and it did locate and format the HD just fine. This is of little help to me, though, as the recovery disk installs XP, and I need to get the system back up with 2k.

I also have three identical systems with the same problem, so I don't think it's hardware.

Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Wow...those drivers aren't listed when you do a search on the model number on HP's web site.

No wonder I was practically pulling my hair out to find them.
