HP USB Biometric Fingerprint Reader

Hi

we have recieved a business pack with a new pc, which has a finger print scanner and some software - we are not going to use the finger print scanner with the pc we just bought - but I would quite like to use it with my HP D230MT

is this possible? I tried to install the software but it said it would only work on the 7700..

any help getting this to work would be great, or is it a case of this wont work :(

thanks

Re: HP USB Biometric Fingerprint Reader

What is the model number of the finger print scanner and what OS are you using?

Re: HP USB Biometric Fingerprint Reader

There isn't much on that scanner. Must be still too new.

see:

Even though you have a desktop, the setup would be the same.

Here is a demo I found but it must be run on Vista.

Is the scanner an actual HP brand?

I could not even find it on the internet much less on the HP web site.

Re: HP USB Biometric Fingerprint Reader

thanks :)

yes its an HP usb finger print scanner - it comes as part of a HP security kit - with a kensigton lock and some software that wont install. I looked all over the HP the site as well and cant find any reference to it :(

I will have a look at the link you sent.. cheers

Re: HP USB Biometric Fingerprint Reader

Richard

This is just a guess and won't help much solving your problem, but I suspect that the reason you can not install the finger print software on the D230 is not that it would not run on that model but because it is part of a package that came with the dc7700. It is also possible that it needs the ProtectTools package.

Here is a link to Windows XP update to ProtectTools for the dc7700. This may give you a new direction to search for a solution:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12...

And this is a manual on ProtectTools:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/CoreRedirect.jsp?redirectReason=DocIndexPDF&prodSer...

Hope this helps.

Re: HP USB Biometric Fingerprint Reader

hi

thank you for replying

i have the software - I just dont want to run it on the 7700.. I was hoping that there would be some drivers about so I could get it working, then find some credential software - it doesnt look like I can do it for now, but hopefully there will be some simple XP drivers soon :)

Re: HP USB Biometric Fingerprint Reader

The fingerprint reader is using an Authentec 2501 swipe sensor and it seems like someone pointed you to the drivers already. The CD that came with your kit has drivers on them already. There is also a user guide in the documentation and drivers CD that came with the kit. The documentation folder in the biometric reader folder has a user guide for the reader and there is a section which shows other compatible software options if you did not want to or cannot use HP ProtectTools Software. There are other 3rd party software applications as well but you need to make sure the software has support for the sensor in the reader which I mentioned earlier. The reader is a few years old by the way. Hope that helps you in your new security solution.
