According to the device ID string you posted the missing device is an Intel(R) 537 Data Fax Voice V.92 Modem.
Try this one I have attached. Unzip it and you will need to manually install it by browsing to the folder from the device in the device manager.

I have a dc7700CMT with an exclaimation over my cpu in "devices" in Windows 7 (64). The driver that is not working correctly is "PCI Simple Communications Controller"
In the Details tab of the PCI SC Controller properties, the value under "Hardware Ids" is:
Can anyone point me to a driver update that will eliminate this problem?

This is the driver you need for that device:

The device is a PCTel : AMR V1.2 modem.
You can try the Windows 7 modem drivers for it from the dv7700's support page.
If they don't work, then you have an aftermarket modem installed, and you will have to find the drivers on your own because I can't find any drivers for that model.

You need to install this driver for the PCI Serial Port.

I have formated my 'HP DC7700 Small Form Factor' recently and loaded Windows 7, and as I don't have the original install and restore cds, I have been having issues with drivers.
The one I am missing is listed below(as it is shown in yellow in the device manager):
-PCI Simple Communications Controller
If I try to update the driver I get the message
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.
To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver.

Please try these two drivers and see if one of them gets the device installed.

I have try`d al your solutions and unfortunately they didn't do the job for me.
PCI Simple Communications Controller problem remains.
I have a DC7700 convertible mini tower
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
same problem as beginning of topic with the same id`s as the Potter,
however the problem stays.

Did you try this driver?
If that doesn't work, run this one again but then try the manual method of installation.
Go to the device manager and click on the PCI Simple Comms Controller. Then click on the driver tab. Click on Update Driver. Select the "Browse My Computer for Software" method and browse to the installation folder that was created when you ran the driver file.
That folder will be located in C:\SWSetup\sp50124. Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked and hopefully, the driver will install that way.

Snap shoot of error message dialoge is attached. and Hardware Ids are below. can you please help me regarding this issue. Thanks.

See if this driver from Intel works for you...
If not, try manually installing the other driver (sp50124) from the device and browse to the installation folder that was created when you ran the file.

I am having the same problems as the others in this thread. I have tried all of the suggested fixes in the thread, but I am still having the "pci simple communications controller" showing the exclamation in device manager. One thing that I have noticed in the thread is there isn't a mention of "vPro." I have this on my machine, would this make a difference in fixing the pci error? Below is the information for the hardware id's for my machine. Thanks for the help in advance.

vPro shouldn't matter.
One of the drivers I posted should work. This one especially should work-even if you have to install it manually.

I have the same hardware signature as previously listed. I am using a dc7700 SFF desktop.
However, I am on Windows 8 Enterprise. None of the links in this page has worked.
sp56720, sp50124 both end up giving me the message that
"this computer does not meet the minimum requirement to install the software".
sp34743 gives me the message that "this operating system is not suported".
when I manually update the drive for "Simple Communications Controller" by pointing to c:\swsetup (all 3 of the above drivers are located there in the respective spxxxxx folders), it recognized the device as Intel Management Engine Interface, but says "This device cannot start Code 10". After that, the device shows up under System Devices, Intel Management Engine Interface" but has a yellow alert on it.
So far nothing I've tried works yet.

From what I know, there is no full hardware support for windows8 as of now for dc7700. When the drivers are released, the same will be available on hp.com
11-19-2012 05:26 PM
No W8 drivers will be released for any PC purchased prior to October 1, 2011.
