I have read all the threads on this website and no one seems to give a different answers than those above. If you can help please let me know how you got through this

Check your device manager.
In XP, you can look up the device name in the device manager.
Control Panel > System (icon) > hardware (tab) > Device Manager
If there is a yellow mark right click it, select Properties, Details tab...
You Will find a string like this one:
copy and paste the entire string and post it here on HP site .... (copy CTRL-C and PASTE CTRL-V)
VEN_ is the vendor and DEV_ is the device model number ...
with that string we can get you the proper driver.

According to your device ID string you have the Intel® PRO/100 VE Desktop Adapter.

Use the following link to donwnolad the HP Compaq dx2300 ethernet driver. Download and install it that's it. Good luck!!

You have the Realtek Ethernet controller:
Here is the link to the download page for it. Select the driver for the operating system you are running.
