I re-install Windows XP in my Compaq Evo D510 Small Form Factor and successfully installed the basic drivers. Everything works perfectly after that.
Last time i remembered before, i installed the following:
BIOS - sp30649.exe
Chipset - sp27532.exe and
USB 2.0 - sp24210.exe
After installing the above, i inserted my external 250 gigs drive but then instantly rebooted.
There was a generated error message saying there was a problem with USB.
Some recommendation were
2. Reduce the number of USB
3. Restore to earlier time
For option 1, i can't find any USB related program. So, i can't.
For option 3, i failed as well
For option 2, i don't how could i reduce the number of USB. But don't know for sure if this was really the solution.
If anyone of you, encountered similar problem or familiar with the solution, i will highly appreciate your support.
Thanks in advance

As far as I understand the problem disappeared after you've reinstalled the system right ?
It's possible that you've basically had a virus which was messing around.
Also - try to install BIOS and updates one by one and see if the problem comes back.
Use Norton Ghost to backup your system first.

To clarify, the system resets immediately
(screen blanks, then shows POST, restarts)
whenever a USB drive gets attached. Tests
with a mouse, camera, and generic hub all
worked fine. The thumb drive worked if
plugged into the generic hub.
One other possible distinction: the drives
are USB 2.0 devices and the others aren't.
I didn't have a self-powered 2.0 hub to see
if that would cause a reset or buffer the
drives successfully. I will test that in a
day or two. If the fast hub resets the
system, then it's likely a controller issue.
If not, and the drives also work when on the
external hub, then it's probably a power
Anyway, I've found lots of comments around
online that seem to be the same problem but

I have also done the recent dreiver updates , whatever I could find on HP'S website. The PC reboots after I insert any USB storage device, Mouse however works fine on USB.
I have installled a separate USB 2 PCI card and it behaves likewise.
Therefor I can't think of a HW Problem.
Did you get any help?
Anythin you cold share?

if they are service pack 3 versions you need to install srvice pack 2 versions.
remove all usb devices.
uninstall all usb drivers.
manually replace all sp3 usb drivers with sp2 versions.
drivers\usbd.sys ver xpclient.010817-1148
all except usbd.sys should be version xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158.
run 'add hardware' and evo will find usb drivers.
check file details again to check they are sp2.
should be fixed as works on mine.

Rory, I uninstalled all the usb drivers using the device manager then I re-booted my pc via the power switch as all usb devices now not working, then when windows started it detected all usb devices correctly and installed sp3 usb2 drivers successfully, now no more BSOD and usb ports at usb 2 speeds, didn't need sp2 drivers. This might help others with same issue. Thanks for your help.

There is a USB driver and a Microsoft fix which may help. http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/S
