Here is the latest 786D1 BIOS (version 1.61) for the dc7600. It contains the binary image file as well as instructions and tools for flashing.
Hope this helps,
I am an HP Employee.

There seem to be two "latest" BIOS updates:
The first, V 1.61 Rev A (8 July 2009)
and the second V 2.04 Rev A (13 April 2007)
I am upgrading a dc7600 Ultra-slim with some more RAM, a Pentium D processor and hope to install Windows 7 64-bit.
Why is the one with the higher version number dated a couple of years *before* the lower version number?
Should I use the one with the later *date* or the higher *version* number? (I don't need the BitLocker feature.)

Use the one with the latest date, and if you are going to use the Windows based flash method, definitely update the BIOS before you install W7, or the PC will only be able to be used as a doorstop.

Thanks. I'll go with the "newer" v1.61 rather than the older v2.04 BIOS image.
Anyone have an idea as to why HP releases what appear to be lower versions at later dates? It is confusing.
I plan to use the built-in BIOS flash utility.

As I recall, I think I used the built-in BIOS flash utility which you access from the BIOS on startup.
To upgrade the RAM, just pop in new sticks. If you put equal amounts in the two banks, you can get a theoretical performance increase from interleaving. I'm not sure if it makes a noticeable performance difference.
I believe there is documentation for both of these procedures on the HP website.
