The Service Reference Guide should step you through this. See section 6.15 for how to replace the "coin" cell battery for your system:
The illustrated parts map should help you locate it on your system board. The battery is labeled XBT1 in the diagram on page 2:
You can get replacement batteries at many electronics stores such as Radio Shack or anyplace you can buy computer components. If you are unsure exactly what to get, pop out the battery and take it with you to the store.

Thanks so much for your help. From the PDF file, I found out that my computer uses a 3 volt lithium coin cell battery. (The link to the hp website is not accessible for some reason). That is exactly what I needed, since I thought I had found the battery slot, but couldn't be sure since the slot was empty. Again, thanks so much for your help.
