HP LaserJet 4100N - 49.4c02 service error

Getting repeated 49.4c02 service error. What does that mean? I suspect it is because users are sending huge jobs, and the printer overheats because this is not a high volume printer.

When I turn it off and let it cool off for a few minutes, it works fine again.

Re: HP LaserJet 4100N - 49.4c02 service error

General 49 errors are formatter related. It can be caused by software, bad memory. See if you can isolate if its one app. maybe even one document that has a problem. If all cause swap the dimms except the lowest 2 which are the firmware. And try. Next Print config. Check firmware version and call HP to see if there is a revision upgrade. Last and most expensive is replace the formatter.

The only good cheap printer is a Pencil. Rest were invented by Salesmen!

Re: HP LaserJet 4100N - 49.4c02 service error

I already have a user sending jobs to another printer and things seem to be fine. It is just the particular user and only when printing from Outlook.

Re: HP LaserJet 4100N - 49.4c02 service error

could be JD firmware problem. Try to update it to the latest version (use download manager...)

I think this was happening with any document, which had print header longer than xx characters (thus outlook, e-mail formatted as HTML)

cheers
Petr

Re: HP LaserJet 4100N - 49.4c02 service error

I have now seen this error occur on 3 different types of HP Printers (4700,4650,4350); firmware has been updated; drivers have been changed from PS to PCL 6 and vice versa. Problem persists. I have attched a particular PDF with embedded HTML graphics that I can reproduce the error with.

Re: HP LaserJet 4100N - 49.4c02 service error

We have an HP LaserJet 4250n printer that gave the same 49.4C02 service error message. What I did was re-seat the firmware chip and the formatter board. I also went to the HP support website and downloaded the latest firmware and installed it. That fixed the printer.

Re: HP LaserJet 4100N - 49.4c02 service error

The fix for this is to pull the Jetdirect( After you turn it off) card out of the printer then re-seat the card just by putting it back into the slot. Turn the printer back on and resend your job. This should work.

Re: HP LaserJet 4100N - 49.4c02 service error

We have traced 'ONE' cause of this error to printing PDF files containing images created with the GHOSTSCRIPT 8.15 PS2PDF converter to the HP Color LaserJet 3000 PS (61.71.661.41) postscript driver.

In this case we printed two pages from google maps to a CutePDF printer. Page one contained the map and page two the route.

When the PDF file was later printed to the HP 3000 printer the 49.4c02 error occured.

This test was repeated several times with the error appearing EVERY time. The original PDF file size was 373kb, another PDF created for the test was 390kb.

The error CONTINUED to occur after the printer firmware was updated to the 2007 (latest release) from the 2005 release.

The error did NOT occur if page 2 of the PDF was printed (the route directions) ... only after page 1, the page containing the map image.

The error did NOT occur if the google directions (map & route) were printed directly from the browser, by selecting the 3000 printer.

The error did NOT occur when another large (12mb) PDF file containing images of scanned pages was printed. This file was selected because the PDF was created with a different software tool.

CONCLUSION:
The appears to be an incompatability between 'some' PDF documents containing big images and the HP PS driver/firmware causing a 49.4c02 service error to be displayed.

In this case the PDF printer that caused the problem was based on the GHOSTSCRIPT 8.15 PS2PDF converter.

Re: HP LaserJet 4100N - 49.4c02 service error

this appears to be the printer has a limit tot he meemory it can allocate to the post script font interpreter for text. I had tried everything suggested and it wouldn't work with all of the latest drivers and firmware for the device and jet direct card installed at 600 PDI but the only thing I have found to make this work is to set the printer's resolution to 300dpi. it works everytime that way. Other option is th choose a different font. The fonts I found to be offending were Papyrus and Helvetica.

Re: HP LaserJet 4100N - 49.4c02 service error

I agree with the PDF causeing the error.
I have a HP 4700 and a 5550 that produce the same error, both only with the "PDF' in question. Users can print to B&W no prob. print other PDF's to the colour ( that's right coloUr ) pinters with no error I don't believe size of the total document is a factor here, though both were under the 2 meg mark and both printers have 256 Mb of Mem.

Re: HP LaserJet 4100N - 49.4c02 service error

I was having a problem with an HP Colour LaserJet 4525dn and the Firmware Update resolved the issue. In addition to that, the printer was having issues with the driver because the user installed the 32 bit driver on a 64 bit version OS; the printer was working fine with the exception of printing large jobs (printing gobbledygook) that needed to be done in stages!!!

Thank you all for the support/ideas provided, it helps people like me (Technical Support) help others!

Re: HP LaserJet 4100N - 49.4c02 service error

I have had this issues on multiple HP printers 9500MFP, 5550MFP and 5350 all of them had this error code after sending a PDF document and instantly killed the printer. The HP engineer said 49 errors don't officially exist! The documents were always large PDF's (10 Mb+).

I have used the PCL6 driver and I think this is the answer, also if that doesn't work try ticking print as picture under advances settings. This to just be a printer driver/software issue.
