My story is that I just paid $80 for a new cartridge for this HP 1100 printer and would rather not throw it away. I purchased a new desktop PC with Vista 64bit OS on it and of course it only comes with USB ports, no "old" style DB25 ports. Hope this works.........more to come...

But this will...

You must not connect everyting together first or your printer will NOT WORK!
FIRST: Plug the USB to Centronics adapter cable into the computer BUT DO NOT CONNECT TO ANOTHER CABLE OR TO THE PRINTER YET!
The computer should automatically recognise and install the USB Printing Support and put a message saying it is ready to use.
SECOND: Connect to the other printer cable and to the printer and power the printer on.
The computer should automatically install the printer driver and put a message that the printer is ready to use.
Now your printer should work OK.
If not go to the Control Panel/Printers and Delete the printer.
Then you have to go to the device manager and uninstall the USB Printer Support there.
After this go back and follow the above directions again.

Second, I purchased just one cable, a female IEEE 1284 to USB printer cable for around $10(US) including shipping from here:
Lastly, I was not able to print connecting my cable to a Belkin Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Mini Hub. I had to connect the cable to a USB port on my Dell D630 Latitude.
Thanks to all for the help in this thread.

Connected a HP laserjet 1100 to Acer Travelmate2700's USB (no parallel port) using this AUD$2.20 (inc pp) lead (link below). Plugged it in; restarted; shazzam I am printing!

If you still have the old cable
then unfortunetly we do not provide
a tested solution using a USB to
Parallel (25 pin) with the old cable.
Anyone who has tried please let us know
as in theory you just require a
USB to 25 Pin Parallel Printer Cable
The USB end fits onto the PC and the
Parallel end fits onto the old cable
but because we do not have a LaserJet
1100A, we are unable to test this.
The solution below has worked for many
customers using a HP 1100A on a
PC/Laptop with only USB ports on 98,
XP, Vista but NOT tested under Windows 7!
1) USB to Parallel (36 Pin Version)
and then you need:
2) Half Pitch Centronics Micro-C
This shall provide a 36 Pin on your
PC/Laptop using this adapter and then
the Half Pitch Cable shall make it
into the mini connector for use with
the HP LaserJet 1100A plus many others.
Let us know if you have any problems
in getting this to work.
