OutLook Attachments

Can anyone tell me why my OutLook Express has decided to stop opening attachements. Any attachment except a Word attachment appears in the shadow print (light gray) and thus will not open if I click on it.

It used to work just fine for pix, etc.

Thanks....David

Re: OutLook Attachments

What version of Outlook express.

What OS?

Have you installed any new programs?

Have you installed any security updates?

Re: OutLook Attachments

Jon,

I am running 2K. I have started using Zone Alarm. I used to use Out Post.

Thanks....

Re: OutLook Attachments

Jon...

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I have installed all of the 2K patches that have been issued in the past few weeks.

I'm using version 6.

Re: OutLook Attachments

One possible reason, is that Outlook Express 6 is more restrictive. By default it's security setting is set to Restricted Zone instead of the Internet Zone (Express 5 used Internet zone).

Try relaxing the security settings.

Re: OutLook Attachments

Hi,
Have a look at this:
OLEXP: Using Virus Protection Features in Outlook Express 6
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q291387

For the benefit of those with OL2K/XP also be aware of:
OL2000: Information About the Outlook E-mail Security Update
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q262631

OL2002: You Cannot Open Attachments
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q290497

Summa summarum: MS wants you protected against 'dangerous' document types by default :) But some of this protection you can disable...

Cheers,
Rune

Re: OutLook Attachments

I updated my Outlook Express to 6 and did not have that problem, of course I am not running X. I have heard that Microsft X is having problems with new software being added. Probably one of the reason I will stick with ME.

Re: OutLook Attachments

Thanks all....

I changed the Out Look 6 setting to "Internet". I also turned off Zone Alarm's e-mail protection. No luck. Out Look still won't open the attachments. Eudora will, but I like the interface of Out Look and would rather use it.

Any more ideas?

Re: OutLook Attachments

Changing the security setting to Internet still might not fix this problem, depending on what your internet explorer security settings are. take a look at the following article on changing security settings in IE6 and Outlook Express 6 and set everything as low as possible. See if this works and use trial and error to get your security settings back up while still being able to open attachments.

I think the section headed "Using the Internet Explorer Unsafe File List to Filter E-mail Attachments" might be of most interest, but see what you think

Re: OutLook Attachments

Dean....these are the instructions that Microsoft suggests at the site John suggests above. I discovered that it had nothing to do with running ZoneAlarm. Good luck!....David

Start Outlook Express, and then on the Tools menu, click Options.

Click the Security tab, and then click either Restricted Sites Zone or Internet Zone (less secure, but more functional) in the Virus Protection section under Select the Internet Explorer security zone to use.

Click OK to close the Options dialog box, and then quit Outlook Express.

Start Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the Tools menu, and then click Security.

Click Custom Level for the security zone that you selected in Outlook Express. The security settings that you choose apply to Outlook Express as well as Internet Explorer
