Sitescope 11.20 monitor properties form unavailable(!?)

[ Edited ]

Part 1:

Hi all

Running Sitescope 11.20 on Windows 2008 Server 32 bit. Everything was working fine until I restarted Sitescope a bit earlier. Since then, I'm unable to edit any monitor & can't add any new monitors either.

When selecting a monitor and clicking on the Properties tab, I'm greeted mostly with the message "The monitor somenumber property form is currently unavailable", on others "The monitor parent group ID must be supplied. property form is currently unavailable" and "The monitor The following property name does not exist for {0} and was ignored: {1}. property form is currently unavailable".

The above happens on any and all monitors, uncluding those in the built-in Sitescope Health screen.

The logfiles aren't giving me anything to go on really, apart from the dreaded Java NullPointerException:

From the error.log file:

I've confirmed that the file it's complaining of not finding is present and accounted for and I've tried restarting Sitescope again multiple times, no joy.

The last backup I have of this particular Sitescope is from about 2 weeks ago, but I've done plenty of work on this particular instance since then. I really, really, really do no to feel up to restoring and having to redo all that work.

If anyone out there can help me out with the above, I'd really appreciate it.

Re: Sitescope 11.20 monitor properties form unavailable(!?)

Just to add, this is definitely not a client problem, same errors occur in both IE and Firefox, several different client PCs and even from the SiS machine itself using http://localhost:8080.

Please tell me someone has encountered this before.

Not too sure what happened to this particular Sitescope instance, but it's essentially completely broken now.

I stopped the Sitescope service, then exported the config as it is currently.
After that, I tried importing a previous export to see if that'll solve things, only to get an error "Import completed as unable to import config".

Tried starting Sitescope back up after that, but now it appears to be stuck in a start-up, shut-down, start-up, shut-down loop:

Logged a call with HP support in the meantime, but from past experience, I don't think I'll be getting an update of any sort in a timely fashion (awaiting any meaningful feedback on another call raised approx. 2 months back), so seems to me that I'm going to have to uninstall Sitescope on this machine completely, reinstall Sitescope 11.20, re-import the export from 2 weeks back and just redo all the work that happened in-between.

Not a very big fan of Sitescope at the moment to be completely honest :(

If I do hear anything back from HP support, or if I make any progress, I'll report back. But first, alcohol. Copious amounts of it.

EDIT: Holding off on the alcohol for now. Rebooted the machine, then retried importing config from a previous export. Import worked this time and Sitescope started up fine, also able to edit monitors. Lots of work missing though, so tried importing the export I made today (after all the hoopla above), Sitescope starts up fine, but again unable to edit or add any monitors.

Going to try and compare between the two exports what is different exactly. Hopefully that will indicate what went wrong where.

Did you manage to fix this?

Re: Sitescope 11.20 monitor properties form unavailable(!?)

No, sadly. HP Support have not been able to identify exactly what's causing this either. Or to be fair, HP Support have not been able to identify what's causing this yet.

The thing that really, really scares me about all this is that should this occur on any of our other Production Sitescope servers, we'd be essentially stuck up a certain creek. In fact, I'm already very far along this certain creek as it is...

I don't know what caused this, I don't know how to fix it, I don't know where the problem is exactly... These are things someone really needs to know in the IT industry I'd say.

I'm currently testing all this malarky on a temporary SiS instance on my local machine to try and see if I can reproduce this (which I'm actually really hoping I can't, since that would, again, hopefully, mean that reinstalling Sitescope on the server in question should resolve this).

It just really feels like what I'm doing with this right now would be something HP Support should be doing, surely?

But anyway, that's the latest on this in summary.

Re: Sitescope 11.20 monitor properties form unavailable(!?)

Hi people,

I experienced a similar problem during past days.

This is my infrastructure:

 - SiS in HA ver 11.21 (11.20 + patch 00231)

 - BSM 9.13

 - SiS integrated with LDap and BSM

I wasn't able to create new monitors and to see monitor properties.

I opened a case and support provided 4 files to place in <SiS install dir>\conf\integration\bsm (overwriting the existing ones):

ciSubTypes.xml

indicators.xml

meas2eti.xml

userDefinedCiType.xml

After that SiS starts to work fine again.

Hope this can help,

cheers

Re: Sitescope 11.20 monitor properties form unavailable(!?)

Hi Vanni

Thanks for that, that definitely helps. You don't perhaps have the HP Support number they provided? I'm hoping to just forward the support number on to HP if you're OK with that, hopefully it hurries things along a bit.

[ Edited ]

Hi Vanni

Accepting your post as the solution. HP Support came back to us confirming that those 4 files are, indeed, the root cause of all the problems listed here.

They sent us the correct files, and that fixed the problem with the monitor properties not being available.

Thanks again for posting that, turned out to be extremely useful :)

Cheers

EDIT: Apparently the corrected files will be part of patch 11.21 as well.

Re: Sitescope 11.20 monitor properties form unavailable(!?)

I am now experiencing this exact same issue.  For me, it occurred when I changed the account that SiteScope runs under from Local System to a domain account that has local admin priveleges.  I have since changed the account back but the damage has been done.

I wanted to use some of the advanced monitors that require a domain account..  wish I had known this when I set up the server.

I opened a case by so far HP just wants me to clean out all monitors and alerts and start over.  I pointed support to this post to see if it is relevant.  I have the exact same symptoms - can't open the Health monitor properties either, or create new monitors.  Nothing happens.

Re: Sitescope 11.20 monitor properties form unavailable(!?)

Update:

I have installed patch 11.21 (up to update 00235) and still have the issue, so if the files are the issue and they were supposed to be included, they were not (although the file dates are 12/10/12).  Perhaps i have some other issue.

Re: Sitescope 11.20 monitor properties form unavailable(!?)

Hi LGentile

Think I may have run into the same issue you describe yesterday. I copied over the new files, but it made no difference.

I stopped Sitescope and overwrote the files again. Before starting Sitescope again though, I made the 4 files read-only, then started Sitescope up.

After this, functionality returned. Since then I removed the read-only flag, restarted Sitescope and it luckily continued to work as expected.

Hope this helps.

Re: Sitescope 11.20 monitor properties form unavailable(!?)

Seeing the same issue (but not on ALL monitors - only a select few) today on our v11.13 SiteScope prod server!

Restarting SiteScope didn't help.

Re: Sitescope 11.20 monitor properties form unavailable(!?)

Unfortunately the issue re-presents itself in 11.21.

Support say that it will finally solved in both BSM 9.22 and Sitecope 11.22 that will be released in short time.

I hope this could be the effective solution!

BR,

Vanni
