SiteScope on WIndows7 monitoring gives Error code: 0x80070721

We want to monitor Windows7 Server  using SS 11.2  installed and configured on Win8 Server.

When we configure Windows 7 Remote Server we get the following DCOM error:

"SiteScope was unable to connect to the remote server. Reason: Method: ExecQuery Error code:
0x80070721. Message: A security package specific error occured"

"DCOM was unable to communicate with the Computer XXX using any of the configured protocol"

Any help is highly appreciated

We have installed SS on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard w/SP1 (64 bit). It's one of the supported platforms.

AIX monitoring is good with this setup.

Problem is Windows 7 Server.

Any suggestions??

Re: SiteScope on WIndows7 monitoring gives Error code: 0x80070721

I am having a similar issue. When attempting to have SiteScope get the CPU status for a windows 7 host it return the following error:
"Status Summary: not data due to Error: CPU Monitor WMI error for machine <machine name>, monitor id:2, WMI error: Method: ExecQuery Error code: 0x80070721. Message: A security package specific error occurred"

Within SiteScope I have the remote windows host configured to use WMI (not NetBIOS)I and have provided a valid user name and password. When I run wbemtest from the SiteScope server to the remote host using the same user name and password I am able to successfully query WMI.

When looking at Event Viewer on the remote host when attempting the scan from SiteScope I see the following Security events:

  • Special logon Event ID 4672 as the user provided by SiteScope (privileges are raised) logonID 3041ea
  • Logon Event ID 4624 as the user provided by SiteScope from the site scope user logonID 3041ea
  • Special logon Event ID 4672 as the user provided by SiteScope (privileges are raised) logonID 3041fe
  • Logon Event ID 4624 as the user provided by SiteScope from the site scope user logonID 3041fe
  • Logoff Event ID 4634 as the user provided by SiteScope logonID 3041fe
  • Special logon Event ID 4672 as the <domain>\<sitescope server> (privileges are raised) logonID 30426f
  • Logon Event ID 4624 as the <domain>\<sitescope server> logonID 30426f
  • Logoff Event ID 4634 as the user provided by SiteScope logonID 3041ea
  • Logoff Event ID 4634 as the <domain>\<sitescope server> logonID 30426f

When I run wbemtest on the SiteScope server I  see the following Security events in Event Viewer on the remote host. The user used in both cases is the same and the remote host is the same:

  • Special Logog Event ID 4672 for the user provided (privileges are raised) LoginID 31c928
  • Logon Event ID 4624 for the user provided LoginID 31c928
  • Special Logog Event ID 4672 for the user provided (privileges are raised) LoginID 31c93b
  • Logon Event ID 4624 for the user provided LoginID 31c93b
  • Special Logog Event ID 4672 for the user provided (privileges are raised) LoginID 31c954
  • Logon Event ID 4624 for the user provided LoginID 31c954
  • Logon Event ID 4624 for the user SYSTEM LoginID 3e7
  • Special Logog Event ID 4672 for the user provided (privileges are raised) LoginID 3e7
  • Logoff Event ID 4634 as the user provided LoginID 31c928
  • Logoff Event ID 4634 as the user provided LoginID 31c954

In both cases there are not errors in in any of the windows logs on the remote host or on the SiteScope Server

The SiteScope server is running Windows 2008 R2 SP1 64 bit
The remote host is running Windows 7 SP1 64 bit

Hi,

As far as I know Win7/8 server is not supported for monitoring with SiS. Now, that WMI error can be investigated on Windows side.

Re: SiteScope on WIndows7 monitoring gives Error code: 0x80070721

That is not excaclty true, HP Site Scope data sheet lists following windows platform

• Operating systems: Microsoft® Windows (32/64
bit versions) 2000 Server/Advanced Server SP4 or
higher, Microsoft Windows 2003 Server/Enterprise
Server SP1 or higher, Windows 2008 Server;

We're monitoring bunch of Windows 7 servers.

Re: SiteScope on WIndows7 monitoring gives Error code: 0x80070721

The solution was similar to this one:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/5960bca1-4bfa-40a7-9147-312489b5d81f/unable-to-get-...

But instead of dealing with the incoming NTLM traffic on the remote host it was the outgoing NTLM traffic on the SiteScope server needed to be set to Allow All. This can be changed using gpedit.msc on the SiteScope server and modifying the value which can be found in:
Computer Configuration/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Local Policies/Security Options/Network Security:Restrict NTLM: outgoing NTLM traffic to remote servers
