SNMP/SNMP by MIB Monitor

Hi Expert,

I want to implement the SNMP by MIB Monitor for our environment.

In some document its mentioned that we can use MIB file but we don't want to use MIB file because SNMP agent is running in the remote server,

If SNMP agent is running on the Devices which I want to monitor then what types of monitor I can use to monitor: SNMP Monitor or SNMP by MIB Monitor.

Thanks in advance,

Regards,

Binod

Thanks in advance

Re: SNMP/SNMP by MIB Monitor

Hi Binod ,

The SNMP by MIB monitor is used when you need to build the counter tree for the monitor , while if you know the specific OID that you want to monitor you could just put it in a regular SNMP monitor.

The following extract might ilustrate this better :

SiteScope SNMP usage
In SiteScope, the SNMP monitors simply do GET request to port 161 of an SNMP enabled device, and the device being monitored responds with a GET-RESPONSE message containing the information SiteScope has requested (or an error message for requests that fail).

In SiteScope a MIB is not necessary for the SNMP monitor. With the SNMP monitor, only the OID is necessary. Once the OID is specified, then the MIB is not needed. The only use of the MIB would be to figure out the specific OID for whatever needs to be monitored on the remote SNMP device. There is another monitor in SiteScope called "SNMP by MIB" that will use a MIB to build out the counter tree for you in SiteScope, that monitor has it's own tech note.

If you are interested to know more about the SNMP usage in SiS you could refer to the following article : http://support.openview.hp.com/selfsolve/document/KM188047

I hope this helps, wish you a nice day !

Re: SNMP/SNMP by MIB Monitor

Hi Binod,

What was the SiS version you have isntalled?

Looking at the error (socket closed) it seems there might be some kind of communication issue between SiS and the router.

Please configure and run the snmp tool from SiS and send me the result you got!

Thank you and wish you a nice day!

 Yordan

Re: SNMP/SNMP by MIB Monitor

Hi,

Thanks,

In the help document it is mentioned that you need to check the OID for your device, How can I configured for the OID in SNMP Monitor

Or do I need to use default settings.

I have following information about the device:

Router name: R1

Router IP address: ---------

SNMP-Server community string (ro) : readonly

SNMP-Server community string (rw) : write

Should I need to have more information for using SNMP Monitor,

Please let me know for more clarification.

Please find the attachment for Result.

Re: SNMP/SNMP by MIB Monitor

Hello,

As I can see with the SNMP tool you receive information from the device then,  my recomendation is to download the correct MIB from Cisco and configure a monitor SNMP By MIB.

Steps to import a MIB File into SiteScope

1- Stop SiteScope service

2- Copy the MIB file into <SiteScope_Root>\Templates.mib

3- Start SiteScope Service

Steps to configure a Monitor SNMP by MIB

Server: Ip/hostname of the server you like to monitor

port: port of the server for the traps

MIB File: Select the file we already import with the previous steps

Community: Type the community you like to monitor, normally is public but that depends of your device configuration

SNMP Version:  Select the version of the SNMP if is SNMP Version3 complete the encryption algorim, username password...

Get Counters:

select the counters you like to monitor.

Re: SNMP/SNMP by MIB Monitor

Hi Battushi,

Thanks for Reply.

As you have mentioned to download the MIB file but I am unable to download from Cisco, some problem is there.

Is any possibilities to use SNMP by MIB monitor without using MIB file, SNMP by agent is already running on that particular devices.

I like your contribution to resolve the problem.

Thanks in advance,

Re: SNMP/SNMP by MIB Monitor

Hi Binod,

The MIB file is like a catalog for all the SNMP messages that we could receive.

We use this file in order to find specific SNMP entries.

In this sense this is required component for this type of monitor , as suggested by the name.

Maybe the following articles would help you understand its usage better:

I hope this helps!
