Increasing SiteScope Java Heap?

Increasing java heap via the Configuration Tool and Sizing sets the maximum heap at 1 GB. Even if you have plenty of RAM.

I've attempted 4 GB and 2 GB in the SiteScope startup registry key, and both result in SiteScope not starting.

How can this be overcome? What's going on in the background with the SiteScope configuration tool ~ in other words, what locations or configuration files should I change to get SiteScope to run with say 8 GB Java Heap?

Thanks.

Re: Increasing SiteScope Java Heap?

Are you implementing the change from the  conf tool or by editing the registry?

The -Xms initial heap size is 1/64th of the machine's physical memory
The -Xmx maximum heap size is 1/4th of the machine's physical memory. If  -Xmx8192m (for 8 GB) is set, there have to be around 16-24GB of RAM.

JV.

Re: Increasing SiteScope Java Heap?

Thanks for your prompt response.

The configuration tool only allows you to set the maximum heap size at 1 GB via the Sizing option. I will look for other options in the tool, but don't think there are any.

As soon as I increase the value in the registry key and restart the SiteScope service, the SiteScope UI never comes up.

I tried 4 GB and 2 GB. Both fail. I would like the value to be in alignment with your figures.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Re: Increasing SiteScope Java Heap?

Thanks so much. I found the first KB article via BSM (which I am intimately familiar with), but didn't see the second.

I've attempted to execute exactly what is in the KB, however.

As per an earlier entry in this thread, I've attempted to increase the Java Heap via the Registry and Config Tool, and anything above 1 GB and restarting the SiteScope service on Windows... and... SiteScope UI doesn't come up. :(

I will let you know the results of the second KB article.

Appreciated!!!

Re: Increasing SiteScope Java Heap?

Hi OVM,

Can you try this.

1 Run the Configuration Tool, and select the Sizing option.
This tool increases JVM heap size to 1024 MB, desktop heap size to
2048 MB, and the number of file handles to 18,000. It also disables
pop-up warnings for SiteScope executables. For details, see "Running the
Configuration Tool on Windows Platforms".
Note: The Configuration Tool supports the default SiteScope service
name only. If you changed the service name, contact HP

2 Restart the SiteScope server for the parameter changes to take effect.

To configure the JVM:

Increase heap space.

By default, the Java heap space for SiteScope is set to 512 MB. This is
insufficient for the normal operation of large instances.
The heap space can be increased up to 1024 MB (this is the recommended
heap size for large loads) by modifying start-service and start-monitor
scripts in <SiteScope root directory>\bin directory

OR

You can also increase heap size of sitescope by accessing Configuration Wizard and selecting sizing, remember run Configuration Wizard as ADMIN else the heap size wont increase.

Refer to here to understand why 1GB is maximum heap for 32 bits even on 64 bit OS:

This depends on the architecture and OS.

This may be moot but HP-UX's Java supports up to 3.5 GB in 32 bit mode.

Re: Increasing SiteScope Java Heap?

Correct, that's a Windows limitation per it addressing mode.
